On Becoming a Member of the Normal Rotary Club of Normal, Illinois |
![]() | |||
| Rotary was born in Chicago in 1905 when four businessmen
met to share concerns for the community. Soon many more persons
joined the original quartet and they Rotated from office to office for
their meetings.
From that start a century ago Rotary has grown to more than 1.2 million members in more than 33,000 Clubs in 200 countries. We no longer rotate for Club meetings but otherwise things remain much the same. We are always looking for members who believe in Service Above Self. Our Club is for adults of working age or retired. Students who want to join the force will be directed to one of our Rotaract Clubs. And, we want members who can live with our Four-Way Test
The commitment to Rotary and the Normal Rotary Club. The one-time initiation fee is $25. Every three months we are billed a little more than $100 to cover the cost of meals and fees to Rotary. (this is the minimum) When we have banquets and special events where there are additional charges for the meals and charges for any guests, for those who choose to go. And, there are plenty of opportunities to dig into the pocket if you want. Every week we have a lottery where you can buy a ticket with the possibility of winning $20. Lottery proceeds go the operating funds. And, at the first meeting of the month members who have a birthday that month bring a gift valued at $10 or more to be auctioned off. Thankfully, many people bid on these gifts. However, no one has to participate in the lottery or the auctions. When you get your name in the news you are likely to be fined a dollar by a Judge and when you feel great about something you may want to give a Happy Fine. We also believe that every member should contribute at least $100 to The Rotary Foundation; Every Member, Every Year campaign. Not everyone does so, but that is a goal and we would like new members to be aware of our goal. When you learn what The Rotary Foundation accomplishes we hope you would find it to be a great investment. A member should attend a meeting every week, but few can do that. Your goal should be to attend at least 50% of the meetings. If you participate in a Rotary event such as a highway cleanup or help Paint the Town, this counts for your attendance. Be aware that one member in our Club has had perfect attendance since 1949, showing that it can be done. And, now you can make up online. If you cannot attend a meeting of the Normal Rotary Club, then you can make up at another club in the area or where ever you are. Making up at other clubs is one of the great benefits of being a Rotarian for it is a nice way to see other parts of the world. When members make up at another Club, they usually exchange banners with that Club. When you visit the Normal Rotary Club you will see many banners on display from around the U.S. and the world. We got those banners by our members visiting those Clubs, or members of those Clubs visiting our Club. Members are asked to volunteer or get assigned to two or more committees depending on their areas of interest. It is in the committees where planning takes places to carry out the projects that benefit the local and world communities. If you would like to consider joining this Club, please speak to a member or contact us via email to: rhdude@yahoo.com We will invite you to a meeting. If you like what you see, we will accept your application and consider you for membership return to the master page of the Normal Rotary Club |
